Naturalist John Muir
Naturalist John Muir
Dear Friends
I greet you from Yosemite
Naturalist John Muir was enthralled by the wonders of Yosemite Valley and its High Country.
Yosemite captivated Muir on his first visit to the Valley in 1868. The following summer, he traveled the Yosemite’s high country, becoming even more spellbound by Yosemite’s beauty. Working with sheepherders that summer, he came to detest the destruction wrought by what he called ”hoofed locusts.” When his sheepherding job in Tuolumne Meadows ended he returned to Yosemite Valley.
For a time Muir worked in Yosemite Valley building and operating a sawmill to cut lumber from downed trees. He built his cabin to include a view of Yosemite Falls! A branch of Yosemite Creek ran under his cabin; running water!
Muir soon became an expert naturalist and passionate advocate for the Sierra wilderness writing articles for national magazines and speaking before groups. At first controversial, some of his theories on a glacially carved landscape eventually caught on with geologists.
Muir helped create Yosemite and four other national parks, founded the Sierra Club, guided presidents and dignitaries through Yosemite, and influenced a nation on the importance of preserving wilderness.
Naturalist John Muir was enthralled by the wonders of Yosemite Valley and its High Country, especially Tuolumne Meadows.
