Climbing Half Dome’s Snake Dike
Dear Friends
I greet you from Yosemite

Climbing Half Dome’s Snake Dike route was enjoyed by John P. DeGrazio

This week the NPS was pleased to honor John P. DeGrazio as the Yosemite Centennial Ambassador of the week!

John is the President of Yosemite Gateway Partners, which is a partnership of government agencies, non-profit organizations, tribes, individuals and businesses that work with the park and collaborate on issues of regional importance to create sustainable cultural, natural and economic prosperity.

#YosemiteAmbassador John shared his story about hiking Half Dome with his daughter.
He also shared his story of the technical rock climb of Half Dome’s Snake Dike route. He is on the Snake Dike route in the above photograph. Read John's full story at his Ambassador page:

Rock Climbers like John also enjoy mountaineering and climbing Yosemite’s snowfields of the Tuolumne Meadows Region.

Have you ever wondered how sawtooth ridges, like this one north of Tuolumne Meadows, form? These thin, knife-like ridges, called aretes, form when glaciers in two valleys pluck away the rock in between them. They are beautiful evidence of the work of glaciers.

However, back to Half Dome. Everyone enjoys climbing Half Dome, Yosemite’s most famous rock formation! Its summit is 4,748 feet, almost one mile, above the floor of the Valley! Its summit was first reached during a difficult climb via a cable trail up the east side of the dome.
