Yosemite Cross Country Skiing
Yosemite National Park is one of the best destinations in the nation for cross-country skiing. The park offers more than 350 miles of marked paths for cross-country skiing in Yosemite. A number of great trails start at the Badger Pass Ski Area, and many more can be found throughout the park. Whether you are new to cross-country skiing or an old pro, Yosemite National Park is the place to be for some of the most scenic ski trails in America.
Yosemite Cross Country Skiing from Badger Pass
Most of Yosemite's favorite cross-country ski excursions start from the Badger Pass Ski Area. One of the most prominent trails is the 21 mile round-trip excursion to Glacier Point. Cross-country skiing is one of the only ways to get to the Glacier Point lookout in the winter. This is because the main road up to Glacier Point is usually snowed over. The pleasant trip from Badger Pass to Glacier Point can be taken as a self-guided trip or with the help of an experienced Yosemite skiing guide. Once you reach Glacier Point, the view of Yosemite Valley in winter is unparalleled. From the top of the summit, cross-country skiers can see Half Dome, El Capitan, and the rest of Yosemite Valley covered in frost and snow. It's one of the most beautiful sites found in our fair country.
Other great trips from Badger Pass Ski Area include a much shorter trip to Old Badger Summit. Altogether about 90 miles of marked trails and 25 miles of machine-groomed track extend from Badger Pass for cross-country skiers. These trails are designed for novices and experts. Those new to cross-country skiing can take advantage of the Yosemite Cross Country Ski School. This school at Badger Pass has expert instructors available to teach the basics and help perfect the form of more experienced cross-country skiers. The cross-country center also provides guides for overnight cross-country ski trips. A number of guided cross-country skiing excursions are available from Badger Pass, and prices for those excursions can be found here.
Cross Country Skiing in Yosemite Valley
Aside from the Badger Pass trails, Yosemite has a wide variety of cross-country trails throughout the Park. Mariposa Grove in particular has some excellent trails for cross-country skiers to take self-guided tours through the beautiful giant sequoias. Trails found throughout the park include overnight trips. However, anyone planning an unguided overnight cross-country ski trip in Yosemite must obtain a wilderness permit from one of the parks ranger stations.
