Yosemite National Park is cracking down on campers who purchase scalped campsite reservations. Some of the most popular campsites at Yosemite book up months in advance, especially reservations for the summer months. Scalpers take advantage of this by making multiple reservations and then selling those reservations at inflated prices on such sites as Craigslist. While a reservation made through the park is normally $20 a night, scalpers tend to list reservations for hundreds of dollars. Scalped reservations make it harder for campers to make camping reservations that are affordable and legitimate. In an effort to put an end to reservation scalping, park officials have started checking identification of Yosemite campers upon check-in. If your ID does not match the name on your reservation, your reservation will be found invalid and you'll be left without a place to stay at Yosemite. Craigslist is also doing their part to help reduce scalping by posting a warning on Yosemite related posts that warns their site users that re-sales of Yosemite camping reservations are illegal. Scalpers have also been known to sell permits for Half Dome on Craigslist and similar sites. Such permits are available for free at Yosemite National Park, though only a limited number of permits can be issued for any given day. In order to ensure that your Yosemite camping reservations are valid, purchase your campsite reservations at recreation.gov. Reservations can also be made over the phone at (877) 444-6777. Once you make a reservation for a Yosemite campsite, you will not be allowed to change the name of the reservation – another measure to help prevent scalping. It’s also a good idea to contact the park regarding climbing permits if you’re worried about availability.
