Skiing in Yosemite
Yosemite National Park is a great destination for anyone looking for the perfect ski vacation. Skiing in Yosemite is unlike skiing anywhere else, because in Yosemite you’ll get to enjoy great runs featuring views of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, El Capitan, and more. Few things in life are as refreshing or breathtaking as Yosemite skiing. Yosemite is known for its Badger Pass Ski Area, the place to go for downhill skiing in Yosemite, and for its world-class cross-country skiing throughout the park. Runs in Badger Pass range from beginner to advance, and cross-country trails vary from a few hours in length to overnight adventures.
Badger Pass Downhill Skiing
Badger Pass features ten downhill runs. The runs break down as 35% beginner runs, 50% intermediate, and 15% advanced. That makes Badger Pass the perfect place for beginning and intermediate skiers and snowboarders to hit the slopes. Yosemite’s Badger Pass offers excellent skiing and snowboarding lessons for anyone new to winter sports. The downhill ski area also features a roped off area where novices can practice their skills before hitting the slopes. It has a great tubing and sledding area as well. Badger Pass is the ideal place for young families to come to ski thanks to programs like Badger Pups, a class created to teach kids age four to six to ski.
The longest runs at Badger Pass have an elevation drop of about 800 feet. Badger Pass is open daily from 9:00-4:00 during the ski season which typically lasts from mid-December to late March. To learn about current snow conditions at Badger Pass, check the Badger Pass Snow Report. Prices for the season are quite affordable.
Cross-Country Skiing
Cross-country trails can be found around the park suited to every skill level. One of the most astounding trails you’ll find in Yosemite is the path from Badger Pass to Glacier Point. Cross-country skiing is one of the only ways to access Glacier Point in the winter, and the view from the summit simply can’t be beat. Few visitors to Yosemite get the privilege of seeing the view of Yosemite Valley from Glacier Point in the winter. It’s a sight that no visitor will soon forget.
Yosemite has a cross-country ski center that operates a number of guided overnight cross-country ski trips. Most visitors find the training and knowledge of Yosemite guides invaluable on such trips, but visitors to the park also have the option of heading out on overnight trips on their own. Any overnight ski trip in Yosemite requires a permit which can be attained at the park.
