Presidents & Yosemite
Friends, I greet you from Yosemite
Presidents' Weekend is approaching; and I remembered that a few Presidents have visited Yosemite.
In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed an Act of Congress in which Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove were granted to the State of California, to be preserved for all time as a nature preserve...the first State Park in this country.... for the enjoyment of the people... the Yosemite Grant. He had visited Yosemite in his heart and soul!!! It was the first time that a government had ever set aside land for its inherent natural and scenic qualities....for public use, resort, and recreation "inalienable for all time. " On October 1, 1890, Yosemite National Park was created by an act of Congress. ...John Muir's writings were instrumental in bringing this about. President Benjamin Harrison was President. He had visited Yosemite in his heart as well. In 1906, because of President Theodore Roosevelt, Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove were re-ceded to the Federal Government and became part of Yosemite National Park!!! A year earlier, however, YNP was reduced in acreage as the Mount Ritter region and the Devil's Postpile were eliminated from its boundaries. In early May, 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt had visited Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove. He was accompanied by John Muir, who discussed conservation matters that were needed to help the Federal Government protect its parks and forests...and to discuss the Yosemite Grant Recession. Several laws were passed a few years later, including the Antiquities Act of 1906. They camped in Yosemite Valley at a meadow near Bridalveil Fall. At Marker V11, there is a plaque commemorating their camping trip. The only one camping out there today was this handsome coyote!! In the fall of 1909, President William Howard Taft visited the Park. Taft Point is named in his honor and appeared on the Yosemite Valley map in 1918. Taft Point is a terrific 2.2 mile hike from the trailhead located on the Glacier Point Road. The views.....terrific. There is also a great Nordic ski trail to Taft Point!!! Two Scenic Wonders guests were married at Taft Point last summer. President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove on July 15, 1938. The spectacular Roosevelt Lake near Mount Conness in the Tuolumne Meadows region was named for his wife Eleanor Roosevelt to commemorate a visit she made to the Park in July 1934. She had called it "My Day Lake." President Hayes with a party of 12 visited Yosemite Valley in 1883. President John F. Kennedy visited Yosemite Valley on August 17 and 18,1962. Please allow Scenic Wonders to provide you with a beautiful mountain vacation home for your stay in Yosemite, located in-between the Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley.
