Camp 4, The Birthplace of Modern Rock Climbing
Dear Friends
I greet you from Yosemite

Camp 4, the birthplace of modern rock climbing, serves as a climber’s laboratory where new equipment and techniques are developed, and then used by rescue teams to help save lives.

In 2003, Camp 4 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as the birthplace of modern rock climbing.

For over one hundred years, Yosemite’s big walls and granite domes have attracted climbers from around the world. Yosemite is a granite crucible that tests skills and stamina. Over the decades, climbers and groups like the American Alpine Club have inspired the public and politicians to protect Yosemite and other spectacular landscapes.

Camp 4 is also a great place to enjoy bouldering.

Bouldering is a mountaineering term used to describe climbing on large boulders either as practice or as a sport in its own right.

A boulder is a large rock, typically one that has been worn smooth by erosion.

An erratic is a rock or boulder that differs from the surrounding rock and is believed to have been brought from a distance by glacial action.

Erratic is defined as….not even or regular in pattern or movement; unpredictable.

ORIGIN late Middle English: from Old French erratique, from Latin erraticus, from errare ‘to stray, err.’

Camp 4 is the birthplace of modern rock climbing. When visiting Camp 4, try not to make any erratic movements while bouldering!
