It’s impossible to boil down the essence of Yosemite into a couple of landmarks—the park is too big, too spectacular—but there are certain sights that unforgettably exemplify its grandeur. Here are four must-see spots to experience during your visit to Yosemite with
Scenic Wonders.
Half Dome
Half Dome is likely the best-known landform in the park. A titanic mass of granite, shear-faced on the northwest, is 8,840 feet tall; more than half its rise is above the Yosemite Valley floor, from which you have numerous opportunities to savor
the mighty formation. The iconic vista from Tunnel View (pictured) is one.
A fit hiker with a permit can climb to the top of Half Dome on a daylong adventure—with cables required for the ultimate ascent.
Bridalveil & Yosemite Falls
The steep rear of cliffs from Yosemite Valley ensures, along with plentiful snowmelt,
lots of waterfalls streaming from the highlands. Bridalveil and Yosemite falls are the signature cataracts in the park, and you can hike to the base of both on short paths. The falls are at their most voluminous in late spring.
Yosemite Falls, which actually encompasses several great plunges of Yosemite Creek, is one of the world’s tallest waterfalls.
El Capitan
Half Dome’s counterpart along the margins of Yosemite Valley is the burly dome called
El Capitan, a world-class rock-climbing destination. Its 3,000-foot granite face—one of the biggest rock walls on Earth—is an unreal sight from the valley floor. While climbers from around the globe tackle the face, you can hike to the summit on a long trail.
Tenaya Lake
One of Yosemite’s most beautiful bodies of water, Tenaya Lake lies between Yosemite Valley and Tuolumne Meadows. Nestled within woods and gentle granite swells, the lake is a
popular spot for swimming, fishing, and boating—and simply soaking in the scenery.
